2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz Microbus

With electric vehicles becoming more mainstream each year, and few capacious EV options for families, the 2024 Volkswagen ID.Buzz aims to address a largely untapped market. The design of the ID.Buzz commemorates the German company’s iconic Type 2 Microbus—or VW Bus for short—which inspired the new van’s retro design. Along with its uniquely nostalgic exterior aesthetic, its spacious cabin will feature flexible seating and three rows. The ID.Buzz’s all-electric powertrain will come in rear- and all-wheel-drive configurations, delivering a driving range that’s expected to be around 260 miles. Plugged into a DC fast-charger, VW says the van will be able to charge its battery from 5 to 80 percent in 30 minutes. The company also eventually plans to introduce its plug-and-charge technology that essentially eliminates the need to use an app or a card for payment to unlock the charger.

When the ID.Buzz goes on sale in the U.S. in 2024, it’ll mark the Volkswagen van’s long-awaited return to our shores. While we’ve now seen official photos of the new microbus, the company still hasn’t disclosed a ton of details, specifically regarding the American version. However, much of that information should start to be revealed later this year, if not sooner.

VW hasn’t said how much the ID.Buzz will cost or what trim levels will be offered. However, current market pricing for EVs leads us to expect it will start at around $40,000.

The ID.Buzz will ride on Volkswagen’s Modular Electric Drive (MEB) platform that currently underpins corporate products such as the Audi e-tron crossover and the VW ID.4 crossover. While Europe will get both a commercial and passenger version of the ID.Buzz, America will only get a long-wheelbase passenger one. The base model will feature a single, rear-mounted electric motor that makes 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque. A dual-motor, all-wheel-drive configuration with around 295 horsepower–similar to the current ID.4–will also eventually join the lineup. We’ve driven a prototype version of the European cargo van, which has a shorter wheelbase and smaller battery than the one we’ll get in the U.S., but it still gave us a better idea of what to expect.

VW has released few details about the ID.Buzz’s battery pack, specifically the one that’ll be used on U.S. models. The company has only said that the battery will be larger than the 77-kWh pack that powers the upcoming European model. We expect that the American ID.Buzz will have at least 260 miles of range per charge. VW claims that those who plug into a DC fast-charger will be able to charge from 5 to 80 percent in as little as 30 minutes.

One of the defining details of the ID.Buzz is its cavernous and configurable interior. The front seats feature adjustable armrests as well as tables that fold out of the backrests for rear-seat passengers. There’s also a removable center console between the front seats. VW says the U.S. version features three rows standard with seating for seven. An adjustable load floor can be fitted in the cargo area, too, which offers 40 cubic feet of storage space. The ID.Buzz’s standout standard features include a 10-inch digital gauge cluster, but the top options include customizable ambient lighting and a set of massaging front seats.

The VW van’s infotainment system primarily operates through a touchscreen that sprouts from the middle of the dashboard. The standard screen size is 10.0 inches, but a 12.0-inch display is optional. We also expect the ID.Buzz to have standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and possibly some sort of rear-seat entertainment system. A subscription-based Wi-Fi hotspot and wireless device charging should be on the roster, too.

Developed by Slovakian startup company, Klein vision, ‘Air Car’ is a dual-mode car-aircraft vehicle, powered by a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol-pump fuel. eight highly skilled specialists at Klein vision worked in total more than 100,000 hours to design, model, and test the 1000kg two-seat dual-mode vehicle. according to the company, the upcoming monocoque model with variable pitch propeller is expected to reach speeds over 300km/h and a range of 1,000km.

The Audi Grand Sphere!

Audi has unveiled the Grand Sphere Concept, its second Sphere concept that previews the possibility of the all-electric next-gen A8. Set to debut at the upcoming IAA2021 in September, this concept pushes the pinnacle of luxury and autonomous driving technology. You can consider it Audi’s rival to the Mercedes EQS.

Let’s start this report with the Grand Sphere’s opulent interior. The doors open in a suicide style a la the Rolls Royce Ghost and welcome to you a cabin that would beat many top-class lounges. And as seen in these images, it’s finished in premium wood, leather, and aluminium. The seats push back and adjust to your preset position so ingress and egress can be easier.

And once you’re seated in front, the cabin design is extremely minimalistic due to the lack of screens. Rather, Audi has integrated them behind the wood that projects to you in the cabin. It’s a full width MMI system that displays all the info from your digital driver’s display to the infotainment.

The Grand Sphere concept also boasts of another cool technology: level-4 autonomous driving capabilities. Once you select it, the pedals and steering wheels retract inside so that you can relax and enjoy the ride. You can also use those screens to watch your favourite movie or attend a video conference call. The experience is further topped by a cooler in the centre console with champagne glasses!

Coming to its exterior design, the Grand Sphere concept’s silhouette is quite unique. The large single-piece grille is the only design similarity with current Audi cars. The short front overhang leads to the sleek headlamps and flowing silhouette that finishes in a fastback-like silhouette. The rear end, like current Audis, also gets a sleek LED light bar.

Propelling this concept are two electric motors that develop 710PS and 960Nm. They draw their power from a 120kWh battery pack and are capable of a claimed range of around 750km. It also can support charging speeds up to 270kW, by which it can recover 300km in 10 minutes. The Grand Sphere is no slouch when it comes to acceleration, with a 0-100kmph time in a bit over four seconds.

Audi has also fitted it with adaptive air suspension to ensure that you have a wafty ride as you’re being driven around. It can also control the pitch and body roll of the vehicle by scanning the road ahead. And last but not least, the rear wheel steering wheel should help maneuvering this 5.35 metre vehicle a piece of cake.

Mercedes to use Luminar Lidar in its self driving luxury cars

Mercedes-Benz said on Thursday that it selected America’s Luminar for the supply of lidar systems to be used in its electronic driver-assist systems and eventual full self-driving systems.

Mercedes has also acquired a small stake in Orlando, Florida-based Luminar, joining Volvo and PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel as a fellow investor. Mercedes sister division Daimler Trucks is also an investor in Luminar and plans to use the company’s lidar for future self-driving systems for semi-trailer trucks.

Mercedes is acquiring its shares in Luminar in exchange for anonymous data gathered from the vast fleet of Mercedes cars around the globe. This data will be used by Luminar to help it develop its own self-driving system, one capable of handling road conditions in multiple countries.

Other companies using Luminar technology include fellow automakers Audi, SAIC and Volvo, as well as self-driving technology companies Mobileye, Pony.ai and Zenseact.

The first self-driving systems that enable true hands-off, eyes-off capability are now hitting the market. Honda launched a system for conditional highway driving in Japan last year, after getting regulatory approval in that country. And Mercedes plans to launch a system, also for conditional highway driving, later this year. Mercedes’ system, known as Drive Pilot, has so far only been announced for Germany.

Both systems rank at Level 3 on the SAE scale of self-driving capability, as a driver needs to be ready to take back control at a moment’s notice, meaning there’s no chance to take a quick nap behind the wheel. BMW and Volvo have also announced similar systems but haven’t said when they will be available.

The sensors also help improve over vehicle safety, said Russell, who is also a Forbes 30 Under 30 All-Star. “Much better automatic emergency braking, collision avoidance systems, those kinds of capabilities that can be had from this. It’s not just about autonomy, it’s about actually saving lives more generally with better active safety systems.”

BMW recently unveiled “IX Flow” which can switch colors! From white to black – it can even sport geometric patterns at the touch of a button. Instead of standard metal panels, the car has e-link technology that amazon uses to change color in their kindle.

The e-link technology is so advanced that the car can even change the co lour of its wheels or only change the color of specific car parts.

Relying on E Ink, the electronic paper technology used in e-readers, and the old Pebble watch, the color-changing paint technology is making its debut on a concept version of the BMW iX that is being presented at CES.

The surface coating of the BMW iX Flow featuring E Ink contains many millions of microcapsules, with a diameter equivalent to the thickness of a human hair. Each of these microcapsules contains negatively charged white pigments and positively charged black pigments. Depending on the chosen setting, stimulation by means of an electrical field causes either the white or the black pigments to collect at the surface of the microcapsule, giving the car body the desired shade.

Just don’t expect to see this at your local BMW dealership anytime soon: the automaker says this is just an “advanced research and design project.”

The innovative paint scheme can be triggered at the touch of a button. Right now, the colors are limited to white, black, and grey. But despite the constrained palette, BMW says it could have implications for the efficiency of its electric vehicles.

“A white surface reflects a lot more sunlight than a black one,” the company says. “By implication, heating of the vehicle and passenger compartment as a result of strong sunlight and high outside temperatures can be reduced by changing the exterior to a light color.” In cooler weather, darker tones will help the vehicle to absorb more warmth from the sun.

The concept of “personalization” is very popular right now in the auto industry. But while most of the efforts are focused on the interior, tweaking the software to remember the driver’s preferred vehicle settings, BMW is bringing the concept of personalization to the exterior of the vehicle.

Mobile phone detection cameras: How do they work?

One of the greatest sources of anticipation (or dread) that we face in our daily lives is the ‘ping’ of a new notification. In today’s highly information-driven world, it can pay dividends to stay on top of that urgent email or to react with a ‘LOL’ to that funny meme.

However, driving a car is one situation in which doing the above can cause much more harm than good. Time spent looking at a phone is time your eyes spend off the road, and numerous studies have shown that activities such as texting while driving can significantly increase the risk of being involved in a car accident.

In fact, a 2006 study by the US CDC Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that using a mobile phone while driving can affect driving ability just as much as being intoxicated.

The mobile phone detection cameras currently being used in Australia are made by a local company, Acusensus, that was founded in 2018 by Alexander Jannink and Ravin Mirchandani. The firm has increased the scale of its operations, and is currently working with relevant transport authorities around the world, with a trial of its speed camera technology recently having taken place in the Indian market.

Mobile phone detection cameras are typically mounted overhead, either by using a tall pole or other road infrastructure such as motorway gantries depending on the specific location that the camera is placed at.

The Acusensus system, known as the ‘Heads-Up’ solution, can be powered via batteries, solar power or through generators, and makes use of a special infrared flash combined with a high-speed camera system.

The overhead positioning of the system ensures that the camera can get a clear view of the car’s front cabin, while the infrared flash is designed to penetrate the windscreen and ensure the camera can take clear photos, day or night, regardless of the weather condition, of vehicles travelling at up to 300 km/h, without any motion blur.

The infrared flash means that unlike certain speed detection cameras, there’s no immediately obvious sign that you have been ‘caught’ or otherwise detected by the device.

In operation, the system constantly takes photos of traffic passing by. Each image is then processed by an AI (artificial intelligence) trained to detect mobile phone use in the car.

The overhead positioning and infrared flash mean that a wide variety of mobile phone use ‘scenarios’ can be detected, including the driver holding the phone or using it in their lap.

If the AI detects a possible offence, the photo is sent onwards for human review. If no mobile phone use is detected, the photo is deleted.

While dependent on the prevailing traffic conditions, Acusensus claims its cameras each typically capture over 60,000 12-megapixel images of vehicles every day.

Queensland is the latest jurisdiction to use mobile phone detection cameras, with the state now issuing fines for offending drivers caught by the technology, joining NSW and Victoria.

In the first week they were live, the Queensland cameras recorded 1504 mobile phone offences and 278 seatbelt offences. A total of 57 drivers also were caught two or more times in the first four days.

Queensland has implemented a penalty of four demerit points and a fine of $1,033 for using a mobile phone while driving. In comparison, the penalty for Victorian drivers is four demerit points and a $545 fine, while NSW has implemented a five demerit point penalty coupled with a $352 fine that’s increased to $469 if the driver is caught using a phone in a school zone.

BMW expanding app functionality!

BMW is allowing owners to do more via the My BMW app, though some of the new features are exclusive to the new iX electric crossover.

The company says the features initially exclusive to the iX will filter down to other models in the future.

All My BMW users can synchronise their calendar, allowing for planned journey locations to be transferred directly to the vehicle’s navigation system.

BMW models with specific optional extras will now permit users to view their tyre inflation pressures via the app, as well as the recommended pressures for each wheel.

iX crossovers fitted with an alarm and interior camera now include a Remote Theft Recorder.

If you own an iX and its alarm system is activated, you’ll be informed via a push notification.

Once the alarm is triggered, the vehicle cameras record images of the entire environment and the vehicle’s interior. You can then access this via the My BMW app.

This means if your vehicle is stolen, you’ll be able to download external footage and interior stills for the authorities.

All BMW iX models also feature BMW Digital Key Plus.

Utilising ultra-wideband technology, this allows owners to unlock, start and lock the vehicle without having to take their smartphone out of their pocket.

It’s available for the Apple iPhone and can be shared with five other users.

All My BMW users with an electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid could already access their charging history via the app.

Additionally, the My BMW app allows users to lock and unlock the vehicle, sound the horn, flash the headlights, and ventilate the cabin, with some models also featuring a remote start function.

The app is available on both Apple’s App Store and the Google Play Store.

If you don’t yet have a BMW, you can still download the My BMW app to view a new Demo Mode, which walks you through what features are available.

The additional features arguably brings BMW’s app offering – at least in the iX – up to the same tier of connectivity as Tesla.

With Tesla’s app, you can adjust your climate control remotely, as well as lock or unlock the vehicle, honk the horn and flash the lights.

You can also track your vehicle’s movement, send an address to its navigation system and, if Autopilot is equipped, even have the vehicle pull out of your garage or parking spare with the Summon feature.

Toyota coming up with it’s first EV

Toyota’s all-electric bZ4X made its U.S. production model debut today. As a leader in electrification, Toyota’s introduction of bZ4X represents the first of a global series of battery-electric vehicles to be introduced under the global “Toyota bZ” brand umbrella. Once the rubber hits the road, bZ4X will have a manufacturer-estimated range of up to 250 miles for XLE front-wheel drive models.

Testing Headlights is a Bright Idea!

The Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) has expanded its testing regimen over the years, moving from a purely crash safety-focused testing protocol to include the testing of systems designed to help you avoid a crash.

Autonomous emergency braking and lane support systems can be invaluable technology in helping you from getting into a fatal accident. But do you know what else can help you avoid an accident? Decent headlights.

That’s especially true for the vast number of Australians who live in regional areas, where the lack of light pollution helps you see the starry sky but the lack of street lights has you relying solely on your headlights at night.

As Vivek Shah mentioned in his piece comparing ANCAP with overseas safety authorities, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) in the US does extensive evaluation of headlights.

It first started testing headlight performance in 2016. Initially, it didn’t affect whether the car ended up earning the coveted Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ appellations, but the IIHS has increased its standards successively since then.

Now, to earn a Top Safety Pick+ title, every variant in a vehicle’s model range must offer good or acceptable headlights; if even one variant has poor headlights, that’ll only get them as high as a Top Safety Pick.

IIHS personnel measure the reach of a vehicle’s headlights both on a straight and on curves, using sensors on the track to measure how far the beam extends at speeds of 64-80km/h with an intensity of at least five lux.

Lux is a unit that means the amount of light that hits (or passes through) a surface; for reference, the IIHS says a full moon on a cloudless light will illuminate the ground below to about one lux.

The IIHS tests both low beams and high beams on five different approaches, and the testers don’t adjust the level of the lights – after all, they reason few vehicle owners would actually do this. Readings are taken 25.4cm from the ground for visibility and 109.2cm from the ground for glare.

The safety authority says, based on a 2021 analysis of police-reported crashes, headlights with a good rating have 19 per cent fewer night-time, single-vehicle crashes than vehicles with poor-rated headlights.

Then there’s technology like Mercedes-Benz’s Digital Light, which can project images like warning signs and guidelines on the road ahead, or BMW’s Laserlight that fires lasers through mirrors and an element filled with yellow phosphorus to help you see further ahead.

All these innovations just go to show how archaic halogen headlights are in 2021, and how much variation there can be between different headlights.

There are arguably three things that can drive a car brand in Australia to add safety equipment. There’s pressure from consumers, however consumers may not be aware of the value of a piece of safety equipment. There’s government regulation, such as an Australian Design Rule (ADR) mandating the item.

But the third is pressure from ANCAP which, though it has no regulatory authority, can help spur a car brand to make a change by giving it a poor rating.

Even if every halogen headlight-equipped vehicle sold today received LEDs tomorrow, there’s still a place for headlight testing by ANCAP. Not all headlights are created equal, and it’s worthwhile determining which headlights on the market do a better job at helping us see (and avoid) the potential accident waiting for us on a dark rural road.

In recent times, we’ve seen some amazing innovations in the lighting space. Matrix LED headlights, for example, can block out individual LEDs within a bank or ‘matrix’. That means you can have a high beam operating all the time and variably adjusting its intensity when an object enters or approaches the beam, helping you to avoid dazzling other drivers.

Debuted by Audi on the 2013 A8, the technology has filtered down throughout other Volkswagen Group brands and models, while other brands have also introduced the tech under different names.

Other lighting innovations include lights that move as you turn the steering wheel, as seen on the likes of the Subaru Forester. Technically that’s not a recent innovation, as the Citroen DS introduced that back in 1967. However, today’s steering-guided headlights are now computer-controlled, and yet this option hasn’t become widespread.

Audi e-tron battery range grows with software update

A software update for the 2019 e-tron 55 quattro will extend the claimed range of the car by up to 20km, according to Audi.

Europe was first to receive the update, and it’ll be rolled out in the USA soon. Audi Australia says all vehicles delivered in Australia are 2020 builds, and were fitted with the newer software at launch.

Owners in Europe and the USA won’t be able to download the update over-the-air, it instead needs to be installed by a dealer.

The update unlocks more range in a few ways. For starters, it unlocks more usable capacity in the lithium-ion battery pack.

Although the e-tron 55 quattro has a 95kWh battery pack, some of that capacity can’t be accessed by the driver to preserve the life of the battery pack.

The update means less of the lithium-ion battery is cordoned off, freeing up more range.

The update changes how the active battery cooling system works for greater efficiency. It also means the front motor can be switched off completely now, making the car more efficient at a cruise or under light throttle inputs.

Software updates extending the range of electric cars are becoming more common.

Volvo and Polestar recently announced an update to free up more driving range in the Polestar 2, and Volvo C40 and XC40.

The brand says a wireless update to the electric SUV brings smarter battery management and regenerative braking, which helps the XC40 go further on a charge in the real world. Volvo hasn’t released an updated range figure, however.
